Our Plants

  • Our nursery propagates all of our plants from seed- we do not buy in starters from larger nurseries or propagate vegetatively (ie from cuttings)

  • By producing seed-grown, straight species (non-hybrid) native plants, we ensure that our plants have high genetic diversity, making them more adaptable to a rapidly changing climate.

  • Additionally, whenever possible we strive to grow plants of a local ‘ecotype’ or provenance. This means we responsibly source seed from wild populations within the greater Catskills and Hudson Valley regions, which is then used to grow out ‘founder plots’ (also known as seed-increase plots). These plots are then used as a seed source for nursery production.

  • These local ecotypic plants are ‘wild-type’, containing all the genetic variation and diversity of a wild population. We (and many others) believe they are better suited to provide the myriad ecological services plants have always provided as the backbone and building blocks of our ecosystems.
